Michael Jackson, The Person of The Year 2009
Who doesn’t do plastic surgery?
Nearly every Korean star does.
Who doesn’t want a fairer skin?
Everyone visited SK-II, Nivea, Kose, Loreal, Chanel, and Clinique does.
Who doesn’t has a little sexual secret?
Nowadays, it’s just a matter you get caught, or not.
For his COOL moonwalk
that walked his own way to fame,
For his CONTROVERSIAL measurements taken to racism
in the Land of equality,
which wasn’t so equal to many;
at the time of opportunity,
which wasn’t open to every.
Michael Jackson,
in the spirit of going against all odds,
with the noble cause of promoting equality,
JasonLiew.com is so honoured to award you
the title
“The Person Of The Year 2009”.
Rest In Peace, Michael Jackson.
No commentsThe paradox of Excess: Mr Obama is Wrong.
Do we live for bread?
No.
We don’t live for bread, ONLY.
We, human, live for something greater.
Human being stands out from other living creatures,
because we are blessed with everything animals have,
but we have redefined human life with a greater cause, than merely food.
We are who we are,
because we go beyond the necessities,
because we live by,
and we live in,
excess.
On the very first few days of his presidency,
Barrack Obama went on TV and criticized multibillion-dollar CEO
about excessive spending.
And Time magazine,
recently came out with an issue,
“The End of Excess”, addressing the greed of corporate high-flyers,
which eventually drove global financial market into hardest hit in post-war history.
With all due respect,
TIME, your article was just bullshit.
Mr Obama, your aforementioned presidential address was nothing,
but nonsense that contradicts with the great American Dream.
Ask a 5 years old kid in childcare centre,
about who he wants to be in the future,
and he says “the brave fire-fighters that save lives”.
And you see a pure-hearted generation with great dreams
that capitalism and materialism have yet to taint on it.
However,
we still see the same thing in these untainted-hearts,
the willingness to live for something greater than themselves,
The kid doesn’t choose this profession
because the urge to put off flames
nor to get on Playboy magazine as the sexiest “iron-man”,
nor because of financial security or 401k.
Indeed,
The kid plans to devote his life to a quite selfless cause.
Would you see fire-fighters as a job?
I don’t.
Fire-fighting is not a job,
it’s a life statement.
It’s about changing endings.
It’s about
“Yes, we can’t do anything about
the occurrence of a tragedy that has already begun
But, we can change the ending of this story.”
And, there goes you read hundreds of 9-11 heroic stories.
It’s only when we have people devote their lives to this sort of exotic profession
rather than 9-to-5 office politics,
our society can function as a whole, with unalienable rights upheld.
Fire-fighters put their lives at risk,
and get into a sort of deal with hell and heaven,
literally exchanging his, one life, for another or more,
we respect their passion and mission.
But when it comes to be one of our friends or family who is doing so,
we are likely to judge it
as “excessive”, “unnecessary”
or a simply “Why you?”
Yes, “excessive”.
Putting down the Playboy magazine’s “the sexiest fire-fighter”,
we get down to Hollywood.
We see Paris Hilton with Chanel bag, Jimmy Choo’s shoes, Tiffany’s ring,
We see Tom Cruise driving Ferrari in Ferragamo sun glasses,
and wearing Patek Phillipe watch.
A rational person may ask
why someone would spend thousands to millions on a Ferrari,
while 1/20 of the price tag
can get you a decent Japanese car or a low-end General Motor’s vehicle,
which also functions exactly same as a tool to transport people from A to B.
Yes, it’s all about pride.
Prestige.
The end-product of luxury
The nature of excess.
Reaching the very fundamental question of life,
We are all equal under the Declaration of Independence,
and we all are told to be inherently unique amongst the others.
But we know,
by saying “everyone is special”,
it’s just another sugar-coated way of saying “No one is special”.
And we live to be REALLY different from others,
some turned out to be a doctor or lawyer,
and some turned out to be a Hollywood star with that Ferrari,
and the rest just turned on the TV, and settled down in mediocrity,
and kept trying to persuade oneself by saying “At least I am simple and happy”.
Pathetic.
What I find out recently,
is that people don’t get happy when they are doing things rationally.
Hereby, I propose whichever professor
that created the “Ten Principles of Economics”
with one of them assuming “people are rational”,
You are wrong.
If you buy a shirt at $15 at Target,
you pay to get something.
If you buy a shirt at $1500 at Hugo Boss,
you pay to be someone.
Excess, is not evil.
Excess makes you REALLY different.
If you are the president of America,
You don’t get happy
just because you are the highest-paid civil servant,
You don’t get happy
just because you propose bills and approve plans,
You don’t get happy
because you read out the blood-boiling presidential speech
written by someone else.
People just don’t get happy enough,
when they are doing what they are suppose to, or entitled to.
They need,
and they want
a lot more to be truly happy.
However,
You get happy,
when you casual morning jogging on the street,
turned out to be a Secret Service marathon ,
with human shield covers you
from more than 8 directions.
You get happy,
When your family Sunday dinner drive-out,
turned out to be a multiple streets closed-down,
forcing hundreds of other families to eat-in at home,
due to traffic diversion.
Everyone will say all of those things are unnecessary.
They are excessive.
They are nothing much about being a president.
But, who doesn’t like it?
Who walks into Oval office
with the single thought of just being a top decision maker
of this democratic nation,
while all provided hard choices to decisions sound lousy, anyway?
It’s about the excessive stuff.
Excess is not wrong.
It’s the powerhouse of society progression,
Greed drives mankind.
It’s like you can’t blame whoever invented knife
for all the murders and homicide.
We should not blame greed or excess.
When you say bankers and top CEOs are bullshit,
getting millions remuneration while companies are in deep red,
you have to think,
provided the liquidity and job mobility in financial institution and intermediaries,
one and only thing to remain talented employees to serve under your company,
and to turn things around,
rather than get out there with their clients
and broker by themselves on Wall street,
is but the “excess stuff”,
the great umbrella of corporate veil,
the bottomless expenditure book,
the thousands dollar lunch,
the Maldives 5-star holidays
and perhaps
the private jet G5.
It is not that we ignore the middle class taxpayers voices,
but we have to acknowledge
the priority of serving the upper class people
who generate the most wealth,
who do have enough influence in the market,
who did bring everyone into this crisis,
but also who could bring everyone through it,
is but a controversial move for the greater good of everyone.
We can play the blame game,
we can fire away everyone who deems responsible.
We can get all the vengeance,
but not GDP,
not credit growth,
not consumer confidence.
It’s not to say all means to bail out corporations are right,
even a 5 years old kid knows
when a bail-out bill is twice the thickness of Yellow Pages,
there’s something seriously wrong.
But, if we don’t do so
the greatest financial system, the biggest capitalism structure,
just can’t sustain and survive by itself.
The harshest truth of capitalism,
is to give an illusion of control.
USA is most well known for its social mobility.
You work smart or hard enough,
you may climb the ladders and get to be someone, someday.
People send their children into Harvard or Brown,
withholding investment and pleasure,
stuck in a white-collar middle-upper class job,
paying a ridiculously high tuition fees,
hoping for a great future for next generation,
and what?
We got top university graduates that can’t find job,
and firms just say
“Sorry, we value practical experience far far over academic exposure.”
And you find,
schools are an utopia of wisdom
but a complete failure for job market.
Be optimistic,
at least from Harvard Business School
One in a thousand, may really end up being a banker, a real capitalist.
At least from Brown,
One in a million, may really end up being a president,
a real rags to riches.
The aforementioned few of them,
do will have their American dream realised,
the so-called “if you think you can, you can!”.
But how about the others?
They either stuck with an aging lousy wife,
or a child with expensive tuition fees to be paid,
or a blood-sucking mortgage who requires 2 full income to sustain,
or all of them.
And you, a so-called white collar top school graduates,
don’t even dare to think about firing boss or quitting marriage.
Congratulation,
American dream just turned out to be the worst nightmare.
Yes, this is how capitalism works.
We must keep the rich richer, and the poor poorer,
but at the same time,
we must give an illusion of control to the poor.
We need to set up “education” as a tool of illusion,
a mean to lure the poor to dream,
We need to show the “excessive” and “luxury” of upper class to them,
in order to motivate them to continue their rat-race
just like you put a BMW sport car beside poker machines in Las Vegas.
Excess,
is never evil.
Excess is but the most important element of capitalism,
Excess is but the spirit of American Dream.
Excess,
is the well-drafted slogan on your super bowl lottery ticket,
“Your ticket to dream” .
To one or few,
the word “dream” is a noun.
To many others,
the word “dream” remains a verb.

Politics. Purpose. Pause
I was born in Malaysia.
A parliamentary democratic country
that embraces the doctrine of "majority rules"
in which,
governors are theoretically elected by the greater crowd,
bills and policies are implemented for the greater good.
However,
what went wrong with this system is,
the doctrine has been always misinterpreted
from classrooms to courtrooms
throughout this great nation.
The way we were taught in our age of adolescence
What schooling did tell us,
not only about "majority rules"
but also, indirectly,
about "minority sucks".
Does being minority in taking a stand
mean the stand is wrong?
Does against the odds
mean one’s opinion doesn’t count?
Probably not.
What we could only conclude is that
the opposing stand is in a greater favour
the opposing stand is of serving a greater crowd,
the opposing stand is deemed to be more correct,
but never, never, never
conclude that the minority’s voice is wrong.
It is sad to see
how the democracy system, one of the greatest invention of mankind,
ends up being a barrier to pluralism.
A barrier that makes some students
in whatever level of education
think that:
"If you are not the majority,
then you are not likely to be right.
And, if you are not right,
then you are wrong."
The aforementioned vicious and absurd logic
further leads to a fear amongst the people
of being the minority
that stand up
and speak out.
In their view,
Because it is always better
to be not alone on the line.
Because it always feels good
to be not personally accountable for.
Because it is always comforting
to hide behind the gigantic shield of majority.
Because it is always a safe bet
to have others to propose your view
and take its fall, for you.
What inspires me about the above thoughts
is of identical nature
which initiated me of writing this blog 2 years ago.
JasonLiew.com
A blog of Cool. Creative. Controversial.
It was firstly
a medium which Jason Liew trained his English for IELTS.
Then,
a toy which Jason Liew indulges his ego
by overshooting Google ranking and various blog rankings
with enormous SEO and blogging technical support from Jason’s brother.
Occasionally,
a tool which Jason Liew used to impress others
by writing poetic and romantic Chinese articles,
under a site of his own name, Jason Liew.
No matter how the purpose of JasonLiew.com changes over time,
the fundamental principle of the blog remains.
And perhaps,
that’s also what delivered Jason’s ranting all over the globe.
It’s never just about the technical support,
technical support can’t make a well-formulated empty site
travel so far,
and last so long.
It’s never just those "laughing stock" articles
that some claimed to be controversial and offensive.
"Outlier" posts lust,
but don’t last.
Good bloggers know that very well.
It’s the very fundamental belief
that relates to discussion at the very top of this article,
the decision and determination
to go against the odds,
to argue on a disadvantaged side
to take a tough stand
to be cool, creative, and controversial.
Perhaps,
That’s what blessed JasonLiew.com
to be closer to success than failure
after 2 years of establishment.
However,
The recent event of a digging of my old post
by various pharmacy students
are yet another interesting issue to be addressed
before a long pause of this site.
Firstly,
I think I’m very fortunate and blessed.
Because most bloggers appreciate feedbacks.
And when your reader’s feedback
is even longer than your original post,
It tells 2 things.
First, your readers might have more insight than you,
Second,
your words had definitely hit the most sensitive inner spot of readers’s heart.
By hitting the right spot,
I don’t mean by getting the matter personal,
which some of my readers did.
In this generally non-responsive blogging world,
by just writing " XXX profession is of all losers",
everyone knows Jason’s claim will only get ignored,
and not get bombarded with lengthy insights.
Those skeptical readers that took things personal
reminded me of Taiwanese Parliament,
which well-educated MP throwing chairs and pens
in a bill debate.
Malaysia,
is still a nation with huge room for improvement
because what were witnessed in those bright minds originated from lecture halls
is so similar to what were found in those tough leaders in the Parliament halls.
What its ruling party good at,
is mainly about hiding behind each others,
And,
What its opposition party knows,
is just simply opposing.
Even a blog doesn’t work
by simply going against EVERYTHING.
Anyone thinks a nation does?

4 commentsAn Inconvenient Truth:
(Big Four),

Fear Factor X: The World Most Disgusting Video
Today, I would like to introduce you Fear Factor X, a name given to this world’s MOST disgusting video. Compared to the real TV show, Fear Factor X is relatively extraordinary sick and horrific. Watching this video can make you weak or possibly give you nausea and shock for several days. Please do not watch if you are weak-hearted.
Thanks to a friend in Germany that preferred not to be identified, for forwarding me this video link via “Life can be a pain”. Basically, I’m not going to tell you what is it about. The video is too disgusting to be explained, recalled, or embedded in Jason’s Blog.
This is the worst video watching experience I ever had in my life. If you did watch uncensored version of Battle Royale, Battle Royale 2, Saw, Saw II, or Saw III,
I would like to tell you that, those movies are NOTHING compared to this video.
- To doctors and medicine students, do leave me a comment to verify whether the broadcast behavior is biologically possible.
- To film industry professionals, feel free to comment and examine whether this video is artificially tricked or edited.
- To kids, this is extremely unhealthy, stick with your Play Boy under the bed.
- To girls, believe me, you will never want to watch this video.
Viewer discretion is strongly advised. You think you are a tough guy? I dare you to watch this video till the end. The video link is at below :
If you did watch till the end, I congratulate you in advance.
“To you, fear is not a factor.”
You didn’t win $50,000 ,
but I’m sure you have just lost your appetite.

2 commentsMalaysia donates RM500 Million to Cambridge University ?
Having read an article by Lim Kit Siang, a prominent leader of an opposition party in Malaysia, it was told that Malaysia government had proven to the world, again, their genuine concern about education, by proposing to donate RM500 Million to Cambridge University.
(For oversea readers, the exchange rate is approximately, $1 = RM 3.6 +- 0.1 )
Pride? Privilege? or Partnership? Poor performed Proton, we sell it; Messed up local education system, we buy our way to UK’s? It is too early to tell yet. We are all waiting for an answer from the Parliament. The following are some highlights of Lim’s article.
” I asked the Higher Education Minister, Datuk Mustapha Mohamed during the budget debate on his ministry yesterday whether it is true that the government had agreed to give a RM500 million donation to Cambridge University and that Petronas and Khazanah Nasional had each forked out RM190 million. “
“ Mustapha denied that there had been a RM500 million donation to Cambridge University, but he did not completely dismiss the subject, using terms like “premature” and “final decision has yet to be made”
” ….as well as the reason for the government giving consideration to such an extraordinary endowment to Cambridge University, Mustapha said that this was part of the Ministry’s “smart partnership” with foreign universities to achieve excellence in tertiary education. “
Toll Subsidy? No money.
Fuel Subsidy? No money.
Chinese school? No money.
Tamil School? No money.
The first Malaysian astronaut? RM95 Million.
New Palace? RM 400 Million.
Sport Centre in London? RM 490 Million.
Cambridge Donation? RM 500 Million.
The pride of being a Malaysian? Priceless.
For the complete article by Lim, it’s here.

4 commentsMichael Backman vs Rafidah Aziz
Started with “While Malaysia fiddles, its opportunities are running dry”, he is now coming back with another interesting and controversial post criticizing Rafidah Aziz, Malaysia’s Minister for Trade and Industry.
Some highlights of Michael Backman’s new article, “Malaysia bites back and industriously trades the insults” :
“The minister, Rafidah Aziz, declared somewhat imperiously that she didn’t care what I said because I am a foreigner and I probably don’t know much about Malaysia anyway.”
“Rafidah added to her remarks about my column that no Malaysian should say such things……. But then the idea that Malaysians cannot comment publicly about how their country is run but a non-Malaysian can, is disgraceful.“
“Perhaps Rafidah needs to be reminded who pays her salary.”
“…recent UN figures show that from 2004 to 2005, foreign investment in Malaysia fell by 14 per cent, when the world economy was enjoying one of its longest periods of growth. One might wonder what the Trade and Industry Minister has actually been doing.”
“…. an assistant minister told the Malaysian Parliament that Malaysia’s first astronaut to be sent into space next year aboard a Russian space mission will be tasked to play batu Seremban, a traditional Malay children’s game played with pebbles, will do some batik painting and will make teh tarik, a type of Malaysian milky tea, all to see how these things can be done without gravity.”
Hey, the idea of making Teh Tarik without gravity is cool. It is definitely going to be an eye opener, and for sure, an expensive one.

6 commentsTIME Magazine remembers Mahathir
“…there is one road in Putrajaya that is different. Although the path affords a telescopic view of the onion-domed citadel that is the new prime-ministerial office, this strip of asphalt is mysteriously overgrown with weeds and scrub. No gleaming skyscrapers have taken root here. Only one building stands forlornly at the road’s dead end: the office of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, the man whose two-decade building spree turned Malaysia into an economic tiger and whose grandiose dream included the construction of Putrajaya itself. The irony for the 81-year-old Mahathir must be overwhelming: Is this really how the story of one of Asia’s modernizing forces is to conclude, at the dead end of an unkempt road in the futurist metropolis he created? …”
Being an avid reader of TIME magazine, I have read this article a few weeks ago through my subscription. Published in TIME magazine dated 6 November 2006, I recently found out that this article is now available in FULL CONTENT online. Nice thing, the link is here.
We are not childish to think that there is an absolute “right” and “wrong” in every conflict. Have a look at 9-11 and Iraq War, history had proven more than once that, the leader with the most support is not necessary having truth at his side. Every man has his own view, especially for those great politicians leading nations with vision and passion. Therefore, what we are trying to do, is not to judge, but to understand. Following blindly is purely an act of loyalty. What we need at this troubled moment of Malaysia, is not more loyalty, but more rationality.

5 commentsMalaysian Chinese Dilemma: Good Thing gets Better
The original article by Disillusioned Rebel was good. However, I found out that what Mamakk comment about that post, was even better. Short and precise. It has just struck a cord with me, saying that “Damn it, that is so true!”
“IMHO, by creating more barriers to education, business, etc for the Chinese, it only strengthened them. Now, it’s the norm for all middle-class Chinese families to send their children overseas for further education. And when they do come back, with a prestigious degree, a wider outlook of the world and a deep resolve to continue to better themselves, to expect no sympathy and handouts, can you really blame them for doing better and them feeling proud about their achievements?
Even worse, when they get back home after a day’s hard work and switch on the TV: they see politicians asking them to go back to China if they don’t like it here, they see politicians threatening to use the keris, they see double-standards in the execution of the law, they see megaprojects involving billions of ringgit being wasted away, they see, they see, they see.”
Have a read about it, it’s definitely worth your time. The mamakk link is here.

5 comments"What is Poverty?" by UMNO General Assembly
With some photos given by my helpful friend, Sam from HELP A Levels, today I would like to proudly present you a reality slide show about “What is Poverty?” according to Malaysia’s ruling party, UMNO of Barisan Nasional.
Recently, Under the leadership of Malaysia Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, UMNO has started its General Assembly.
Inside the assembly hall, all kinds of controversial issues are being discussed, such like “Malays are being polarized under current economic structure”, ” The inequality of wealth distribution between Malays and Non-Malays”, “The racial integration” and “The unity of the nation”.
Outside the assembly hall, UMNO’s members are telling another story, a story of blood and tears about how HARD, how TROUBLED and how MISERABLE Malays’ lives are, in this oil exporting nation, Malaysia.
Shall we begin? For This UMNO 2006 General Assembly Motorshow, this year the theme is “What is Poverty?”. For overseas friends, the currency of Malaysia is RM, the exchange rate is $1 to RM3.6 +-0.1 .
Firstly, Malays said they are poor! We need government help! “I can’t even afford to pay car parking fee.” I need to risk my supercharged Mercedes Benz Brabus E-Class by illegal parking it outside the hall.”
After that, Malays begged again, “Stop rising the petrol price!”, claiming that they can hardly cope with their fuel expenditure. While they are driving some of the most oil consuming luxurious cars, Porsche Cayenne and Brand New Mercedes Benz S-Class 350. Each of them cost approximately RM 1 Million after 200% Malaysia’s Imports Taxation.
Then, Malays shouted again, “I don’t have a driver, I lead a primitive and laborious life of finding cark park space daily.” However, they can afford to purchase RM500,000 supercharged Mercedes Benz AMG C-Class 240 Avantgrande and RM1.5 Million Porsche Turbo S.
Apart from that, some started to defend Malaysia’s government and said, “ It is absolutely justified to build Putrajaya.” Without that remote administration, the traffic of this city would be a disaster. Just like this car park is full, we need to park our “cheap” Mercedes Benz S-Class and “mediocre” Jaguar S- Type outside here.
Subsequently, some Malays argue that “Car purchasing discount for Malays is justified, since transportation is but a necessity.” Are Mercedes Benz S-Class, AMG Mercedes Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series and Toyota Harrier, some of those necessities?
Two dark blue Mercedes Benz E-Class said, “We are poor!”.
The SSangYong Korean car said,” I’m poorer!”.
Kia Carnival fought back, “I’m the poorest!”.
Both Mercedes Benz cars asked Kia Carnival, “Who is your owner?”
Kia Carnival answered “My owner is a Malay janitor cleaning toilets in the UMNO assembly hall.”
What is the wealth inequality that some Malays fighting for?
According to UMNO, what is poverty?
This?
This?
or This?
Today, UMNO tells us that, poverty is a brand NEW BMW 7 series with single numbered car plate. (In Malaysia, single numbered car plate is obtained through EXTREMELY expensive tender by Malaysia Road Authorities)
Furthermore, UMNO proves to the people in every far flung corner of this world, that poverty justifies the illegal parking of this Mercedes Benz S-Class 320 with single numbered car plate, even there is a big “NO PARKING” sign at the right side of the wall.
A car sticker written in Malay Language, “Kami Cinta Pak Lah” means “We love Pak Lah” Pak Lah is a friendly nickname for Malaysia current Prime Minister Abdul“LAH” Ahmad Badawi. Yes, I love Pak Lah also, but I love his UMNO members’ cars even more.
What we have learnt today? We have learnt about what is the so-called “poverty” by UMNO Malays. We have finally understood that “Action speaks louder that word.” It was not about the interesting debates or fiery speeches inside the assembly hall; In contrary, it was the small little thing outside the hall, that UMNO Malays forgot to cover, told the world the most about HOW POOR THEY ARE.
